• These texts provide sound, broad-based, courses with the accent on extension rather than acceleration. [See 'Create your own magic square".] Basic techniques are taught/reinforced and plenty of practice given, but the accent is on problem-solving skills and enjoyment of mathematics.

Star Challenges motivate students of all abilities. With them, each student demonstrates his/her mastery of the technique(s) recently met. The number of stars is a measure of the difficulty of a Challenge. However, many three star challenges are accessible to students over a wide ability range, and students can earn 1, 2 or 3 stars on such a challenge. (Click here for more information on Star Challenges)

• At the end of each topic in each text, there is a set of High Level Challenges, all linked to the topic.
Able students are expected to tackle these Challenges when they complete a section (rather than moving onto the next section ahead of the rest of the class).

Students can also do them in their own time.
