These are the original courses that have motivated students to work on extension problems in their own time. Teachers, parents and INSPECTORS have been delighted with students’ response to this material.
Fission Guide
Y7 Big Edd and Y8 Fission provide a sound, broad-based, course with the accent onextension rather than acceleration. Basic techniques are taught/reinforced and plenty of practice given, but the stress is on developing problem-solving skills.
Star Challenge
Star Challenges motivate students of all abilities. With them, each student demonstrates his/her mastery of technique(s) recently met. The number of Stars is a measure of the difficulty of the Challenge. However, many three star challenges are accessible to students over a wide ability range and students can earn 1,2 or 3 stars.
High Level Challenges
The High Level Challenges were first used in the highly successful text,the Big Edd Guide. They are at the end of every topic. At Tarporley High School, students in our two top sets loved them. Almost all top set students did every High Level Challenge. Many completed all 152 of them before the end of the year, and came back and asked for more. (So there are now 200 in Headbanger.) But, unexpectedly, many of the students in our two second sets tackled a lot of these problems with great enthusiasm. These students had successes with puzzles and problems that we had thought well beyond them. Confidence and motivation soared and, later, so did exam results. Many other schools using Big Edd and Fission have reported similar experiences
