The Headbanger Guide
To The Y7 Framework
By Barbara Young & Andy Hamilton These books contain most of the material in the Big Edd Guide
and Fission Guide, rearranged to fit the Y7 & Y8 Frameworks.
|
• These two books deliver the Y7 & Y8 Frameworks in topics, and they are accompanied by documents that map each section
of each text clearly to the Framework.
• Y7 Framework contains a revision of Level 4, but is mainly Level 5.
• Y8 Framework is a consolidation of Level 5 and a start on Level 6.
• An integral mental arithmetic course runs throughout both texts.
• Each section is planned to be one lesson.
However, teachers can adapt them to suit themselves.
Any techniques which are mental/oral starters, or those which need
teaching, are at the beginning of the section.
The development exercises form the core of each section.
Each section also contains Star Challenges to be attempted
at the end of the development exercises and/or set for homework.
• It also contains 200 HIGH LEVEL CHALLENGES.
Students can work on these puzzles and problems whenever they wish.
The High Level Challenges were first used in the highly successful predecessor to Headbanger, the Big Edd Guide.
At Tarporley High School, students in our two top sets loved them. Almost all top set students did every High Level Challenge. Many completed all 152 of them before the end of the year, and came back and asked for more. (So there are now 200 in Headbanger.)
But, unexpectedly, many of the students in our two second sets tackled a lot of these problems with great enthusiasm. These students had successes with puzzles and problems that we had thought well beyond them. Confidence and motivation soared and, later, so did exam results.
Many other schools using Big Edd and Fission report similar experiences. |
