For low attainers, there is an adapted version of each mainstream course. These EXTRA courses are based on the mainstream course for the year, with ideas developed in smaller steps, and with plenty of EXTRA practice. In Y7 and Y8, EXTRA students take the same end-of-topic tests as mainstream students and achieve satisfactorily.
Barbara Young worked on mainstream material with bottom set students in several different years. Each time students had a problem with the work, both teacher and students worked hard to pinpoint what was causing the problem and to find a way to overcome it. It took 5 years, but gradually a system was devised that enabled these students to achieve far more than they had though possible. Self esteem soared. Driller
