Anita Straker, of The Numeracy Strategy, saw how Jugglers’ EXTRA texts were being used very effectively in several schools.
She commissioned Barbara Young to write Springboard 7, adapting material already in used in the Y7 Kooldood Guide EXTRA. The material was adapted in presentation and format and trialled with her bottom set students.
In 2001 it was sent out, free of charge, as photocopiable material in a binder to all secondary schools in the UK.
Springboard 7 consists of 15 units of work for a two term programme of mathematics for approximately 3 hours a week. These units cover the teaching objectives essential to moving pupils from Level 3 to Level 4 in mathematics.
Each unit has some introductory notes for the teacher, which suggest a time allocation and highlight teaching objectives and important points; each unit also has key vocabulary listed. The units are arranged in sections so that you could base a set of one hour lessons on them, but they are easily rearranged to fit lessons that are shorter or longer than one hour.
All work is done on the worksheets provided. The material includes practice challenges and some more demanding Star Challenges.
If available, copies of Springboard 7 can be obtained from:
